October 10, 2026 Gold/Silver Spot Prices: Market Divergence Amid Fed Policy Uncertainty
Today's precious metals market shows volatile consolidation. Gold maintains high-level fluctuations amid Fed policy uncertainty, while silver underperforms due to diverging industrial demand. As of the close on October 10 Beijing time, international gold prices stood at $2,985 per ounce, down 0.3%; spot silver at $31.25 per ounce, down 0.8%. Market participants are closely watching the latest comments from Fed officials and upcoming US economic data, which will be key to determining the short-term price direction of gold and silver.
Gold Prices: Safe Haven Support Meets Technical Adjustment
Today's gold market shows a high-level fluctuation pattern. Although the Fed is in a wait-and-see period, ongoing geopolitical tensions provide safe-haven support for gold. Data shows global gold ETF holdings increased slightly by 1.2% in the past week, indicating that institutional investors remain optimistic about gold's medium-term prospects.
Technically, gold faces strong resistance near the $3,000 mark, with short-term adjustment pressure. Technical indicators show gold's Relative Strength Index (RSI) has retreated from overbought territory but remains above 50, indicating market sentiment hasn't completely turned pessimistic. Support levels are at $2,950 and $2,900, while resistance levels focus on the $3,000 and $3,050 marks.
Market analysts point out that the current bull-bear battle in the gold market mainly revolves around Fed policy expectations. On one hand, the market expects the Fed may start cutting rates by the end of 2026, which would reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold. On the other hand, better-than-expected US economic performance may prompt the Fed to maintain a hawkish stance, suppressing gold prices.
Silver Prices: Weak Industrial Demand Drags Performance
Compared to gold, silver performed relatively weak today, mainly dragged by unclear industrial demand prospects. Data shows global manufacturing PMI declined for the second consecutive month, raising concerns about industrial metal demand. As a precious metal with both industrial and monetary attributes, silver's price performance is affected by dual factors.
Technically, silver prices encountered resistance below the $32 mark, with increasing short-term downward pressure. Support levels are at $30.50 and $30. If it breaks below this level, it could further test $29.50. The silver-to-gold ratio is currently at 95.5, at a historically high level, indicating silver's weaker performance relative to gold.
Notably, silver ETF holdings decreased by 0.8% in the past week, indicating investors are relatively cautious about silver's short-term prospects. However, in the long term, with the rapid development of green energy and electric vehicle industries, silver's industrial demand is expected to continue growing, providing medium to long-term support for silver prices.
Market Influencing Factors: Multiple Games Amid Policy Wait-and-See Period
The current precious metals market is in a Fed policy wait-and-see period, with multiple factors affecting gold and silver prices:
- Fed Policy Expectations: The market is closely watching comments from Fed officials for clues of policy shifts. Recently, several Fed officials have made dovish remarks, suggesting possible slowing of the rate hike pace, which supports gold.
- Geopolitical Risks: Ongoing tensions in the Middle East and no signs of easing in the Russia-Ukraine conflict have increased gold's safe-haven demand.
- US Economic Data: Upcoming US non-farm employment data and CPI inflation data will be market focal points. If data shows economic slowdown and cooling inflation, it may strengthen Fed policy shift expectations, benefiting gold.
- Dollar Movement: The US dollar index has recently strengthened with fluctuations, putting some pressure on gold and silver prices. However, the market widely expects the dollar's strength to be unsustainable, which may provide rebound opportunities for precious metals.
- Central Bank Gold Purchases: Global central banks continue to increase gold reserves, with strong gold demand from emerging markets like China and India, providing fundamental support for gold prices.
Investment Strategy Recommendations: Differentiated Allocation to Capture Structural Opportunities
In the current market environment, investors should adopt a differentiated allocation strategy, flexibly adjusting according to their risk preferences and investment objectives:
- Conservative Investors: Can appropriately allocate to gold ETFs or physical gold as safe-haven assets to hedge systemic risks. It is recommended to keep gold asset allocation between 5%-10%.
- Balanced Investors: Can use a combination of gold and silver allocation, balancing gold's safe-haven attributes with silver's industrial attributes. A 7:3 gold-to-silver allocation ratio is recommended.
- Aggressive Investors: Can focus on trading opportunities from gold and silver price fluctuations, while paying attention to related investment targets such as mining stocks. However, it's important to control positions and set stop-losses.
From a technical analysis perspective, gold has strong support in the $2,950-$3,000 range, and investors can consider building positions in batches within this range. Silver needs to pay attention to the support strength at the $30 mark. If it can effectively hold this level, a technical rebound may occur.
Market Outlook: Waiting for Clear Direction Amid Observation
Looking ahead, the precious metals market remains in a wait-and-see state, waiting for clearer signals. In the short term, gold and silver prices may continue to fluctuate within the current range, waiting for guidance from US economic data and Fed policy signals. In the medium to long term, against the backdrop of increasing global uncertainty and potentially declining real interest rates, gold's allocation value remains prominent.
Analysts point out that if the Fed indeed starts a rate-cutting cycle, gold is expected to usher in a new round of upward momentum. Silver may benefit from the long-term trend of green energy industry development, with growing industrial demand providing support. However, silver's performance in the short term may continue to be affected by gold's trend and dollar strength.
Overall, during the current Fed policy wait-and-see period, the precious metals market shows a divergent pattern, with gold performing relatively better. Investors should closely monitor Fed policy movements, US economic data, and geopolitical developments, flexibly adjusting investment strategies to capture structural opportunities while controlling risks.
